The Public Citizen Bus pass perk now a taxable benefit Cheesy movehits OC Transporetiree spouses

Another 650 retirees.

Many, of course, are well into Their years as Senior Citizens. Somewhere, Especially Surviving spouses, are a tight Incomes and rely on the pass to go to the grocery store, doctor or visit friends. If anything, it CAN keep older people mobile, Especially if They do not have cars.

But I know there are detractors out there, Particularly with the transit strike still fresh in Their Minds, Who will be outraged That the free passes are made available through Transpo's Various collective agreements.

So hats off to Revenue Canada for pulling a very cheesy move. The federal tax department now wants a piece of pie That That little Transpo and Many Other Municipal Transit Authorities in Canada Provide Thurs spouses or survivors of retirees. Canada Revenue has deemed the pass a Taxable Benefit, beginning in 2010.

Transpo spouses under 65 years WHO hold an annual adult pass valued at $ 930 will pay $ 80 to $ 120 more in federal taxes.

Those 65 and over will pay $ 40 to $ 60 extra Because They have Seniors' passes, Which are valued at $ 395 (The new rule Also applies to the mayor and 23 councillors, as well as Another 55 or so city Employees, of Whom all get free passes.)
